This month we concluded the math PD offered by Lisa Ashe, Joe Reaper, Kitty Rutherford, and Denise Schulz from DPI’s math section, headed up by Jennifer Curtis. School-based elementary and secondary teams from several districts attended separate full-day sessions in October and December. The PD was based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ book, Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All.

MISSION CRITICAL at the Friday Institute

MISSION CRITICAL: Preparing District Teams to Support the Digital Transition is a full-year program offered by the CCRESA in partnership with the Friday Institute. The first of five sessions was held on September 22nd. Fifteen districts sent teams composed of high level decision-makers. Teams spent much of the first day discussing leadership issues around student learning, with a focus on how technology can enhance the learning environment and opportunities for students. The next session, on October 30th, will focus on C&I and professional development issues. in the meantime, the Friday Institute facilitators have asked district teams to meet at their sites to continue the discussion and planning that began on September 22nd.

Leadership Roundtable for Principals

apple-booksFor the first time this year, we will convene a Leadership Roundtable for Principals that will study five books pertaining to aspects of leadership such as communications, building positive and trusting relationships, motivation, decision-making, and organizational and personal change.

First priority for the Leadership Roundtables will be given to principals. Participants may sign up for one or more sessions depending upon their interest. Registration will close a month in advance of each session to ensure participants receive their complimentary copy of the book in time to prepare. Registration is now open to allow more than 2 participants per district. The Waiting List will open after 20 seats have been filled. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Break service and lunches will be provided on site.

Candi McKay, a national consultant and author of You Don’t Have to be Bad to Get Better, facilitated a workshop on instructional leadership for principals and principal supervisors.  For two days in July, participants learned how principals must remove their “rose-colored glasses” and create a culture of learning rather than a culture of “nice.” Through a series of engaging exercises and drawing from Ms. McKay’s book, participants discussed what principals should be looking for in classrooms, how principals can support teachers improve their practice, and how to have conversations with teachers about their instruction.
